DEXA Body Composition

Information about your DEXA scan.

DEXA Body Composition has recently advanced into a valuable tool to assist patients on their healthy lifestyle journey.

DEXA Body Composition is a quick, non-invasive procedure with negligible radiation, that offers highly accurate differential values of body composition: fat, lean muscle mass, and bone.

These accurate, reproduceable values can be used to adjust your nutrition, fitness, and/or medical treatment, and to set measurable goals and guide you on your healthy lifestyle journey.

Please note that body composition scans are not covered by medical aids and are only available at a private rate, payable on the day of the scan. Results entail a printout or PDF of biometric data/measurements only and do not include a radiologist's report. We highly recommend that patients discuss the results with a healthcare or fitness professional.

General Information

DEXA Body Composition results include traditional metrics such as BMI and body fat percentage, which are known to have significant limitations. However, significant added value comes with the following:

  • Fat Mass Index (FMI): A measure of body fat relative to height, calculated as total fat mass (kg) divided by height squared (mยฒ). It provides a more precise assessment of adiposity than Body Mass Index (BMI) by distinguishing fat mass from lean mass.
  • Lean Mass Index (LMI): This is a measure of lean body mass relative to height, calculated as total lean mass (kg) divided by height squared (mยฒ). This, too, is a more accurate evaluation of body composition than BMI, as it helps assess muscle and organ mass independently of fat mass.
  • Visceral fat (g): This is the fat stored within the abdominal cavity, surrounding internal organs such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines. It is linked to increased health risks, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation.

These values are plotted on graphs to accurately evaluate body composition and guide intervention. Patients will find significant value in follow-up scans to evaluate their response to treatment, lifestyle changes and exercise.

Before your DEXA scan

To ensure accurate results:

  • Ensure you are scanned before eating breakfast or drinking large amounts of water. Also avoid strenuous exercise for at least two hours before your scan.
  • Wear comfortable clothing free of metal fastenings or zippers.
  • Remove jewellery, belts, or other metal accessories before the scan.
  • ย
Let the radiographer know

Please inform the radiographer:

  • If there isย anyย possibility that you might be pregnant.
  • If you have any metal in your body.
  • Of previous body composition scans you may have had, as comparison with previous results will help you track your progress towards your body composition goals.
  • ย
What to expect

During your body composition DEXA scan:

  • You will lie flat on a comfortable scanning table.
  • The scanner arm will move slowly over your body, capturing images.
  • The scan typically takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete.
  • The procedure is painless, but you will need to remain still during the scan for optimal image clarity.
  • ย
After your DEXA scan

Once your scan is complete:

  • You can resume your normal activities immediately.
  • The results we provide will entail a printout or PDF of your biometric data/measurements only and do not include a radiologist's report. We highly recommend that patients discuss the results with their doctor or healthcare provider.
  • If you would like to monitor the success of any interventions, you might find value in scheduling a follow-up scan. For this, we recommend following the same preparations you made for the first scan.
